During a recent Fit Feet screening at Tavares High School, something quietly powerful happened.

Special Olympics athletes came in for foot screenings — and several were identified as lacking proper foot support. Ill-fitting or missing insoles may not make headlines, but for athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities, the impact is real. Poor foot support can cause chronic discomfort, limit mobility, and make it harder to safely participate in the sports and daily activities that bring joy, confidence, and connection.

On-site, athletes were fitted with properly sized insoles by medical professionals. One athlete — who had been participating without any insoles at all — received new ones from a podiatrist right there during the screening. The difference was immediate. Improved comfort. Improved stability. And a little more ease in every step that followed.

Moments like this are why programs like Fit Feet matter. When healthcare is brought directly to individuals rather than waiting for them to navigate a system, barriers dissolve. A screening becomes a turning point. A simple insole becomes a foundation — for movement, for confidence, for a better quality of life.

We are proud to support Special Olympics and the compassionate volunteers and medical professionals who show up for our athletes, right here in South Lake County.
