Sometimes the most meaningful transformations start with something simple. A covered outdoor space. Some shade, some seating, some fresh air. What Building Blocks Ministries built with support from Live Well Foundation of South Lake’s Transformation Grant was exactly that, and so much more.
Today, the patio at Building Blocks Ministries is not an amenity. It is the heartbeat of a day program that has fundamentally reimagined what learning, connection, and community can look like for the individuals it serves.
A Space That Brought People Together
From the moment the patio opened, its impact was visible. Multiple times each day, participants gather there for education, job training, gardening, recreation, and mental health counseling. What had been confined to four walls now spills out into natural light, open air, and shared experience.
The design itself reflects a deep commitment to accessibility and comfort. Shaded areas, fans, and multiple seating options mean the space is usable year-round. Thoughtful transitions between indoor and outdoor areas allow individuals of all mobility levels to move freely and safely. The patio was built for everyone, and everyone uses it.
Demand has grown so steadily that Building Blocks implemented a sign-up system to ensure equitable access. That small logistical detail says something large: this space is valued, claimed, and woven into the daily rhythm of the program.
Where Wellness Meets Nature
One of the most powerful elements of the patio’s evolution has been its integration with mental health services. Counseling services, supported through United Way of Lake and Sumter Counties and provided by Family Life Counseling Center, now take place in the outdoor environment. Garden-based therapeutic sessions offer participants a space for calm, regulation, and reflection, grounded quite literally in growing things.
Alongside those sessions, hands-on gardening and STEAM activities allow participants to experience growth in two directions at once: in the raised beds around them and in themselves.
A Bridge to the Broader Community
The patio has done something that four walls rarely can. It has opened the program up.
Community volunteers now regularly join participants for art activities, pet therapy, gardening, and outdoor recreation. Weekly programming includes collaborations with community partners who come not as visitors, but as contributors to daily life. Relationships are forming that extend well beyond the program itself.
Perhaps the most tangible expression of that community connection is the Lunch Buddies program. What began as business-sponsored lunches has grown into something richer, now including collaboration with local schools so that adult students, staff, and community members share meals alongside participants. These gatherings are simple in concept and profound in practice. They break down barriers, build authentic relationships, and center every person at the table in dignity and shared experience.
A New Vision for What Service Can Look Like
Building Blocks Ministries has always believed in the people it serves. The patio is a physical expression of that belief, a deliberate investment in the idea that meaningful learning and growth happen not only indoors, but in shared spaces where community, nature, and inclusion meet.
What started as an outdoor improvement has become essential program infrastructure. A place where individuals are seen, supported, and empowered to grow in every sense of the word.
Live Well Foundation of South Lake is proud to have played a role in bringing this space to life, and even prouder to watch what Building Blocks Ministries has done with it.
