At Hope Preparatory Academy, the mission has always extended beyond the classroom. That commitment was put into action this January when severe weather threatened vulnerable residents across Lake County.
In partnership with Hope International Church, Hope Prep designated the Nathaniel Community Gymnasium as an emergency shelter location. Over the course of two nights, the school opened its doors to individuals seeking refuge from dangerous conditions, offering a safe and welcoming environment to guests from across the region.
One of the most meaningful parts of the response was a partnership with LakeXpress, which helped connect residents to shelter services. Thanks to transportation support, the shelter’s furthest guest traveled from the Eustis area to reach safe accommodations. This collaboration ensured that a lack of transportation never stood between a resident and the help they needed.
Through this effort, Hope Prep provided:
- Emergency Shelter Designation. The Nathaniel Community Gymnasium served as an official severe weather shelter, offering protection from dangerous overnight conditions.
- Safe Overnight Accommodations. Guests rested in a clean, climate controlled space designed to promote security and peace of mind.
- Emergency Agency Partnerships. Coordination with local agencies allowed the team to communicate shelter availability and respond quickly to community needs.
- Transportation Support. Working with LakeXpress, Hope Prep helped residents without reliable transportation, including those from Eustis, reach shelter safely.
- Resident Safety and Dignity. Every guest was treated with compassion and respect, offered not just a place to sleep but an environment where they felt genuinely cared for.
The success of this shelter operation is a reminder of what community preparedness and partnership can accomplish. As Hope Preparatory Academy continues serving as a resource for Lake County, support from organizations like Live Well Foundation of South Lake helps strengthen this work: safe shelter, transportation access, and life-saving services when residents need them most.
Together, Hope Prep and its partners are building a stronger, safer, and more compassionate Lake County, one where every resident has access to protection and hope in their moment of need.
