Across South Lake, New Beginnings of Central Florida has seen a dramatic increase in families seeking food assistance — a 40 percent surge in emergency pantry requests this month alone. Thanks to strategic investments and strong partnerships, their team has been able to respond with compassion and dignity.

New Beginnings has expanded its pantry storage by more than 30 percent, added new refrigeration for fresh produce and proteins, and launched digital check-in software that allows families to access partner pantries across the network without reapplying. These improvements help streamline support while preserving dignity for every family who walks through the door.

Even with larger Second Harvest deliveries and a dedicated volunteer stepping into a leadership role, the need has grown so rapidly that New Beginnings temporarily shifted to serving three days a week just to keep up.

Still, every day brings a reminder of why this work matters. Like Nakeyla, a FEMA worker and single mother of three. When the federal shutdown halted her pay, she arrived overwhelmed and unsure. “I’ve always been the one helping others,” she said. “I never thought I’d be the one asking for help.” Her story is one of many showing how New Beginnings continues to steady families in their hardest moments — and why strong community partners are essential to South Lake’s well-being.
