At East Ridge High School in Clermont, inclusion is more than an idea. It is a way of life. Through Special Olympics Florida’s Unified Champion Schools program, students with and without intellectual disabilities have come together to form a Unified Flag Football team that celebrates friendship, teamwork, and respect.

This year, their dedication and unity led to something extraordinary. The East Ridge Unified Flag Football team advanced to the FHSAA State Championship, competing for the Division 4 title on November 14. For many of these athletes, it is the first time they have had the opportunity to compete at this level, proudly representing not only their school but the entire South Lake community.

Teachers, families, and coaches have seen firsthand the transformation that happens when students are given the chance to belong. Players who once felt unseen now walk with confidence and purpose as teammates, leaders, and friends. The connections built through this program extend far beyond the field, creating a school culture rooted in empathy, understanding, and inclusion.

This incredible milestone is more than a win for the team. It is a celebration of what happens when communities believe in the power of inclusion and when every student is given the opportunity to shine.
